Cornelian Cherry Dogwood (Cornus mas), a small deciduous tree native to Europe and Asia, is one of the first to bloom in January with bright yellow pom-pom flowers lasting into late February. Its clusters of olive-shaped bright red berries which appear in mid-summer are edible but bitter, and if not left for the birds, can be used for preserves and syrups, or for distilling vodka in Armenia. Our Cornelian Cherry, located across from the Conservatory, is over 80 years old!
