Why not volunteer to help keep the rose beds at Bush’s Pasture Park blooming and neat? Given years of budget cuts and limited staff, the Park is increasingly reliant on volunteers to keep garden beds at their best. You can adopt one or more beds in the Modern Rose Collection! Sign up for one gardening season to start.
Adopter Responsibilities include:
• Spring pruning – February to March
• Weeding as needed
• Deadheading weekly to remove faded flowers and promote increased bloom – Spring to Fall
Responsibilities of Adopters
• Contract and Liability Waiver: All volunteers must sign a City of Salem “Waiver of Liability” prior to participation, if you haven’t already done so.
• Tools: Volunteers are expected to provide basic tools such as gloves, pruners, hori hori, knee pad, etc. All cutting tools must be sterilized with rubbing alcohol before each workday. Bring a bucket for hauling debris to disposal area.
• Weeding: Regular removal of weeds is a key responsibility.
• Maintenance: This can include pruning, deadheading, edging, removing debris (but not the mulch!) and other maintenance tasks.
• Let us know if you cannot tend your bed at any point during the season, even temporarily.
• Do not apply fertilizers, herbicides, or weed killers.
• Do not remove roses from the gardens.
This program is open to the public. Adopt one or more beds on your own, or with family, friends or co-workers. Choose from available beds. Work on your own timeline, at your own pace. Normally this means checking on your bed weekly. Use your own tools. Training in pruning and deadheading will be offered.
